Kitchen Confidential: brilliant but cancelled

Vinnk introduced me to the FOX sitcom, Kitchen Confidential, last night. I stayed up until 2 am watching episodes of the fictionalized adaptation of Anthony Bourdain’s tell-all behind-the-scenes kitchen exposé of the same name.

The show is directed and produced by Darren Star (Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, Sex and the City) and stars Bradley Cooper as Jack Bourdain, Anthony Bourdain’s much better looking fictional alter ego. If I were forced to make a comparison, I would say that the show is like Sex and the City in the kitchen – plenty of sex and lots of good humor as well. Being a show based on a restaurant,we get a few good shots of “food porn” (seductively presented and artfully photographed food) as well.

Unfortuately, FOX only aired 4 episodes on American TV although a total of 13 episodes were made. I am sure that they are floating around somewhere on the internet. Definitely worth checking out. Also, there is a fan site of the show here.

Another brilliant-but-cancelled FOX show worth checking out is Wonderfalls, the story of a young graduate of Brown University who ends up working at a gift shop in Niagara Falls while trying to “find herself.” One day, inanimate animals start talking to her, changing her life forever…. Now available on DVD! Let’s hope that Kitchen Confidential gets a DVD release as well.
